Well done to all the Hillbillies who braved the elements to run the Devils Burden Hill Relay leg 3 Recce. With howling winds and horizontal rain you certainly realised why we carry full body cover in races. In this case it was on before leaving the car.
For wind and rain that is about as bad as I have seen it on the Lomonds. When I got to the top of West Lomond I was literally blown across the top and down the other side. Not that I wanted to stop and take in the view.
Andy, Ryan and I decided, perhaps foolishly, to loop back from the forest and run back to Scotlandwell. Running or walking into a headwind with horizontal rain certainly lets you know you are alive.

The race is run over the Lomond Hills in mid-winter and will require
full body cover (waterproofs, hat & gloves) to be carried or worn at all times. A map of each leg (1:50,000 OS sheet No 58 and 59) and compass and whistle must also be carried. There will be compulsory kit checks at each stage changeover and any team failing to comply will be disqualified. The race consists of 3 hill legs and one trail leg, leg 4. You will need some experienced hill runners who must be capable of navigation (especially leg 3) in the hills in adverse weather. Leg 4 is a run through a forest on good forest trails and does not require any hill running experience.

On a cold and frosty Sunday nine hardy hillbillies lines up in a foggy Scotlandwell to take on the hardest leg of the Devils Burden Hill race. We were soon rewarded after a hard climb by breaking through the low cloud and getting tremendous views.
It was a good easy paced run and helped us make up our minds on our preferred routes.

Please find details from Ian Johnston (Mens Club Captain) regarding planned Sunday training runs over the next four weekends;
The “Devils Burden” Relay Race takes place on Saturday January 24th 2009. In previous years it was found that being familiar with the surroundings and terrain of this race helped Runners on race day. To this end I plan to organise training runs of Leg 1 and Leg 3 during November. Leg 2 and Leg 4 will be addressed during December and will take 1 hour 30 minutes each. This leaves January to go over the routes again, though their will probably be different groups out then on different parts of the course.
Sunday 30th November – Leg 3:- Meet at Strathmiglo Village Hall at 9.30am. From here we will car share to Scotlandwell. The route back will take 2 hours 30 minutes. We will then car share back to Scotlandwell.
Sunday 7th December – Recce run of the The Law Breaker Hill Race route in Tillicoultry. Please meet at Tillicoultry Glen at 9.30am. There will be an option for a longer run for those who wish to run a bit further.
Fell type shoes are a must for these runs. Also full body cover is recommended as the weather can close in over the high parts of these trails. A hat and gloves are advisable. Recovery drink, bar or gel helps keep your energy levels up.
Sunday 14th December – Recce Run of our Festive Forest Run course at Blairadam Forest near Kelty. Please meet at 10am at the Forest Race start which is the Lochornie entrance on the B914 Cleish road. Trail shoes are preferable but road shoes will suffice.
