There a strong contingent of Carnegie runners amongst the 180 athletes who took part in Sunday’s Bishop Hill Race from Scotlandwell. The race incorporated the opening event in the 2008 SHR Championships and it was good to see many of our club’s leading hill runners taking part.
Andy Symonds fresh from winning the Mighty Deerstalker adventure race in the Scottish Borders on Saturday excelled again finishing 2nd overall in 18.12. Andrew Wright was also in good form placing 7th in 19.07. Tommy Lawrence in 20th position (20.22) completed the Carnegie team which placed an excellent joint 2nd team with Carnethy on 29 points and only one point behind team winners Shettleston Harriers (28 points).
Sandy Bennet competing in his first race since recovering from injury placed 48th in 22.20 and Kenny MacDonald finished well placing 57th in 23.01.
The race was won by Shettleston’s Jethro Lennox in 17.29.

The Bishop Hill Race on Sunday 2nd March is race 2 of the 2008 Carnegie Harriers Hill Running Grand Prix. This is a short (3.5km) local race with just 300m of climb and so is an ideal race for experienced or novice hill runners.
In order to encourage as many Carnegie Harriers to enter the race as possible we are going to run a Bishop Hill Race recce run and training session at 9am on Sunday 24th February. The plan is to meet at Portmoak Village Hall (Scotlandwell) then spend about 1 1/2 hours practicing the ascents and descents on the Bishop Hill race course and hopefully getting some top tips from the more experienced hill runners on how to descend rapidly.
Details of the race can be found HERE
I hope to see you on either the training session at 9am on 24th February or at the start line of the race at 2pm on 2nd March.

The fist race in the Carnegie Harriers 2008 Hill Race Grand Prix takes place this Saturday (16/02/08).
I have just spoken to someone from the Carnethy club who will be doing the kit checks as people get on the bus on Saturday. So please remember to take a compass, a whistle and either windproof body cover or waterproofs (depending on the weather), as stated in the race details.
Good luck to everyone who will be racing, see you there !
Paul
Last night the Carnegie Harriers Committee agreed which races are to be included in the 2008 Hill Running Grand Prix (see below). The race series starts with the traditional jaunt around the Pentlands for the Carnethy 5 Hill Race in February and ends in late November with a trip to Aviemore for the Meall a’ Bhuachaille Hill Race. With the recent increase in interest in hill running in the club and with such a wide range of races it shoud be an interesting series. I therefore look forward to seeing many of you out on the hills over the coming months.
Paul
