2008 Hill Running Grand Prix Race Series Agreed

Last night the Carnegie Harriers Committee agreed which races are to be included in the 2008 Hill Running Grand Prix (see below). The race series starts with the traditional jaunt around the Pentlands for the Carnethy 5 Hill Race in February and ends in late November with a trip to Aviemore for the Meall a’ Bhuachaille Hill Race. With the recent increase in interest in hill running in the club and with such a wide range of races it shoud be an interesting series. I therefore look forward to seeing many of you out on the hills over the coming months.

Grand Prix success for Sandy Bennet and Judy Turner

Well done to Sandy Bennet and Judy Turner who have won our 2007 Hill Running Grand Prix. The series of 13 races began back in February at the Carnethy 5 and it was the athletes best 7 events which counted towards their overall points total, with the final race being at Tinto on Saturday.

Sandy has now won the Hill Running Grand Prix title for the past six years which is a tremendous achievement. Judy Turner has enjoyed a superb season on the hills and was a deserved winner of the ladies title.

Andy Hunter has also been on form in the hills in 2007 resulting in a fine second place and leading M40 in the Men’s Grand Prix. A close battle developed between Paul Hutton and Colin Reynolds with Paul placing third overall (2nd Male Senior) with Colin one point behind finishing fourth (3rd Male Senior). Jim Lang ran well winning the Male Super Veteran award. Fabienne Thompson placed second lady and first F40 while Morna Fleming finished third overall and Lynne Bennet placed fourth (3rd Female Senior award).

Sixty one club members took part it at least one Hill Running Grand Prix event and all the awards will be presented on Sunday 9th December at our Awards Evening at The King Malcolm Hotel, Dunfermline.

Race Report by Garry Taylor

TINTO Hill race 2007

Ladies and Gents. Saturday 10th November, 2007 was indeed a day to remember. We, as members of a great club mustered together to show how strong we can be when sadness is still around us. We were able to show to our friend George Murdoch how much we cared for him. I am also very sure that George would have been looking over us with his customary big smile.

I am sure the Tinto Hill race will never in its history have seen so many orange and green vests. Sunglasses should have been the order of the day as we dazzled all the other entrants.

47 Harriers on the start line, how good was that!! As a tribute to our Hill running captain, I am sure we did him proud.

Off the race started, up over narrow paths, jostling for ground to put your feet down on, running like startled sheep trying not to think of the torture ahead. The 246 racers moved into a long conga line. We got our own place to run and walk up and over the rocky paths and outcrops of the approach to Tinto. For those brave enough to look upwards the mist had already started to descend on the top making it look like a real moody moutain.

The biting cold wind was soon forgotten about as the lungs roared and the hearts pounded. It was a reasonable ascent but no matter where you looked you could still see how far it was to the top!!.

As the front runners hurtle towards you as speeds you can only imagine you could do on a mountain bike or a car you let yourself think, “IT CANNOT BE FAR TO THE TOP NOW” How wrong were many of us !!!!

At last the top was in sight and the thought of “HOW AM I GOING TO RUN BACK DOWN” coming into the minds you realise what a special breed real Hill Runners really are (MAD)

It is very warming when you see some of the clubs elite road runners doing so well on the ascent but funny how scared they looked as they attempted their descent.

In all another great day for the Harriers. Great runs by many but special mention to Tommy Lawrence, Judy Turner and Fabienne Thomson. Tommy showed how classy a runner he really is and how he can mix it with the best with a great time of 34.11. Judy Turner (39.19), running like a demon, making it to third position and beating some very good females and males on the way down and Fabienne winning first over 40 prize (45.36).

In all this race was a day out to remember for many reasons. I am sure we will have turned many peoples heads with so many vests shining brightly in the late afternoon sunshine.

To close, the tribute to GEORGE MURDOCH was absolutely fantastic.

New Hillbillies Hill Race - A Great Success

Results HERE

26/08/2007

Carnegie Harriers Hill Race is a resounding success
The 2nd Carnegie Harriers Hill Race was held in perfect conditions over a four mile course with 1400 feet of climbing from Scotlandwell on Sunday afternoon. The race attracted a good entry of nineteen club members including Richie Cunningham who could barely have recovered from his exploits in the Ochil 2000’s the previous day. From the gun a group of five runners forced the pace up the first climb to Whitecraigs with Andy Hunter forging ahead just before the summit. Andy kept his momemtum going reaching Bishop Hill in the lead and went on the win the race in 31.30 with Tommy Lawrence only ten seconds behind in 2nd (31.40). Richie Cunningham placed 3rd in 32.26 and despite falling four times on the steep descent Stevie Ogg finished 4th (33.24).Judy Turner was the comfortable winner of the ladies race clocking 35.56 in 6th position overall while Morna Fleming placed 2nd lady in 49.21.

Well done to everyone who came along and took part in the race and to our Hill Running Captain George Murdoch and his team for organising the run.
