The Lairig Ghru Race lived up to its usual reputation of uncertain weather ranging from baking heat to wind and rain during the course of the event. No hail stones were reported which can only be a plus.

Seven Hillbillies made the trek down to Dumfries and Galloway for the Durisdeer Hill race. Tommy L , Steve K, Kenny M, Andy S, Alison W, Neil C and Sandy B.

Neil Campbell finishing Durisdeer

Gregor was shouting, “What took you so long!”

We were rewarded by great weather and a well organised race, new course records with a great feed at the end. Perhaps a theme emerging here. Thanks to Adam Anderson of Carnethy the race organiser for a great race and loads of cakes.

The registration and cake eating were both in an old church and the latter sitting amongst the headstones of the graveyard. Quite symbolic.

There was a record race entry of 300. Normally it is a much smaller field.

As quite a few Hillbillies wish to travel to this race can we meet at DAS at 8.45am  for car sharing. The race starts at 12 and you have to park about a mile from the start. Anyone wishing to car share please leave a comment below.

As it is Clachnaben long trousers are recommended  as the heather there fair rips your shins. You have been warned.

There a strong contingent of Carnegie runners amongst the 180 athletes who took part in Sunday’s Bishop Hill Race from Scotlandwell. The race incorporated the opening event in the 2008 SHR Championships and it was good to see many of our club’s leading hill runners taking part.

Andy Symonds fresh from winning the Mighty Deerstalker adventure race in the Scottish Borders on Saturday excelled again finishing 2nd overall in 18.12. Andrew Wright was also in good form placing 7th in 19.07. Tommy Lawrence in 20th position (20.22) completed the Carnegie team which placed an excellent joint 2nd team with Carnethy on 29 points and only one point behind team winners Shettleston Harriers (28 points).

Sandy Bennet competing in his first race since recovering from injury placed 48th in 22.20 and Kenny MacDonald finished well placing 57th in 23.01.

The race was won by Shettleston’s Jethro Lennox in 17.29.
