Normans Law Hill Race - from Niall Wilson

Five Harriers took part in the Normans Law Hill Race from Luthrie. Niall Wilson was the leading Carnegie runner placing 41st in 38.38. Chris Davidson reached the finish in 42.09 (67th) and Alison West was 71st in 42.21. Melanie Sinclair made her hill and Carnegie Harriers debut placing 83rd in 44.55 while Bill Fairley posted a time of 52.36 finishing 111th.

Symonds places second at Carnethy 5 Hill Race

Carnegie’s Andy Symonds was in tremendous form at Saturday’s Carnethy ’5′ covering the 6 mile course with 2500′ of climbing in 48.58 finishing 2nd overall. Andy enjoyed an excellent tussle with race winner Rob Jebb (Bingley Harriers) who successfully defended his title crossing the line in 48.41.

Richie Cunningham ran a strong race placing 38th in 59.06, Tommy Lawrence was 41st in 59.47 and Peter Simpson finished 54th and 3rd M50 in 1.01.07.

Carnegie’s men finished 3rd team overall with 125 points behind Carnethy HRC (83 points) and Hunters Bog Trotters (87 points).

Fabienne Thompson finished 11th lady in 1.09.45 while Alison West was 39th lady (2nd F50) in 1.12.12 and Isobel Burnett was 41st lady in 1.22.08. Carnegie’s ladies finished 8th team overall.

There was an excellent turnout of 27 Carnegie runners amongst the 484 finishers with many members finding superb early season form on the hills. Alan Manson clocked an impressive 1.06.40 (107th) removing over 6 minutes from his 2009 time. Simon Kuz ran well posting a time of 1.15.38 (246th) and Bill Duff was one of the leading M60 runners completing his race in 1.18.18 (282nd). New member Chris Davidson despite going over on his ankle finished 351st in 1.24.14, Mark Johnstone timed at 1.32.57 and well done to Ken Daniels who placed 2nd M70 in 1.32.58.

Six Carnegie teams complete the Devils Burden
Fife AC hosted the annual Devils Burden Hill Relay on Saturday morning from Falkland. Six teams representing Carnegie Harriers took part and the complete set of results can be found on the Fife AC website HERE.  Well done to Andy Sim for organising the Carnegie teams and to everyone who took part who all enjoyed a great day on the hills.  Our leading team finished 12th overall.

Carnegie’s Andy Symonds produced a tremendous run to win Saturday’s Meall a`Bhuachaille Hill Race from Glenmore. Andy covered the 6.1 mile (2100ft) new route in a fast 50.53 finishing 14 seconds clear of 2nd placed Robbie Simpson (Deeside Runners). Andrew Wright placed an impressive 6th overall in the high quality field in 54.05 while Peter Simpson made his hill racing comeback finishing 30th (2nd M50) in 1.00.31.
Carnegie Harriers were represented by sixteen members at Meall a`Bhuachaille which was the second largest club turnout behind Cosmics who had twenty three runners out on the hills.
Richie Cunningham was the fourth Harrier to finish placing 42nd overall (1.03.09) and Kenny MacDonald made a welcome return to the hills finishing 72nd in 1.07.37. Niall Wilson made his hill running debut for Carnegie placing 79th in 1.08.46 and Alan Manson who has enjoyed an excellent season was 89th in 1.09.53. Ryan McKenzie in 111th position clocked a time of 1.12.35, Tom Bowie placed 3rd M60 in 1.13.00 (113th overall) and David Greig reached the finish in 1.17.51 (147th).
Allan Macaulay maintained his lead in our Hill Running Grand Prix by placing 151st in 1.18.27 with the Grand Prix’s second placed Andy Sim finishing 153rd in 1.18.39. Neil Campbell completed his first race of the weekend at Meall a`Bhuachaille in 1.19.44 (159th) before completing the Lasswade cross country event the following day.
Alison West was the leading Carnegie lady timing at 1.23.25 while Yvette Wilson on her hill running debut enjoyed a strong run finishing in 1.24.26. Morna Fleming put in a strong effort finishing in 1.41.04.

Who says hill running isn't a dirty business?

At the Skyline, the second of Carnethy’s double race weekend, there were a record 170 finishers and 169 of them chased the inspired winner, Oleg Chepelin from Shettleston, who was over 6 mins clear at the end having had one of those “in the zone” runs we all dream about. Murray Strain (HBT) hung onto 2nd from club mate Dan Gay. Shettleston completed the double as Fiona Maxwell won the ladies category (as well as being first Over 40 woman!) with Jacqui Higginbottom second woman and second Over 40 ! Carnethy picked up first over 40 and 50 men’s prizes through Stewart Whitlie (4th) and Murdo McEwan (31st) respectively as well as both team prizes. Graham Arthur of Ilkley was first Over 60.
It was sunny and clear, but runners had to fight the wind on the first half, though were thankful to be blown home in order to get to the cake table as soon as possible (and at least, if possible, to be there before John Blair-Fish!).

Matt Davis of Carnethy won the coverted Man-or Mouse title, for the combined Manor Water and Pentland Skyline times, from the 12 brave (or foolhardy!) people who managed it this year, with Chris Oliver (HBT) winning the squeaky mouse by just 26 secs from Caroline Coyle (sorry, this was announced the wrong way round at prize-giving), due to the late burst Caroline put in at the finish of the Skyline which unfortunately cost her the mouse (or was it the tactical slowing down by Chris that won it for him?).
