Break out the banjos and crack open the moonshine because Carnegie Hillbillies got a top ten at Comrie Hill Relays. Steven “video star” King took the first trail leg and handed over to Tom “break-a-leg” Bowie and Neil “the shorts” Campbell for the hill leg and after crossing a fairly tough & boggy ridge passed on to Pete “the awesome” Smith who ate up the ground and quite a few competitors as he blasted round leg 3. It was all down to David “the star” Greig to hang in there and charge down the last leg to the finish and with a massive sprint across the field brought us home for a No 10 position. There was much cheering and whooping from the burger munching crowd.
It is a real shame that we only had one team out as this is such a great event. There are only two hill legs and the other two are trail runs. If we can manage to get 6-8 teams out for the Devils Burden in February we can manage more that one for this relay race. The race is very well organised and they have a superb BBQ & cake feed at the end.
Thanks to Strathearn Harriers for putting on a superb race. Full results HERE

From Strathearn’s Phil Mestecky:
A record 35 teams from 18 clubs took part in this year’s relay run over a reconfigured course. The new route for leg 2 proved largely popular with runners although some over-zealous course taping by one of the landowners attempting to prevent runners visiting a pheasant wood created a degree of chaos towards the end of leg 4.
The men’s race was a real thriller with the lead changing hands between Carnethy, Deeside and Strathearn (briefly) before Robbie Simpson’s record-breaking run (the first leg 3 runner ever to break the hour) seemed to have put the race beyond doubt. However, as seems inevitable in the Comrie Relay, a final twist and a couple of missed turnings by the final Deeside runner allowed Tim Darlow to snatch victory with a final sprint across Laggan Park to the finish to claim victory for Carnethy by just 7 seconds after over 40km and 3.16.07 of running.
In the women’s event it was also a close-run thing with Ochil and HBT “Trottettes” swapping the lead a couple of times before Andrea Priestley’s excellent leg 3 run (1.13.45) opened up an unassailable lead finishing in 3.57.08.
Fife AC not only won the Men’s Vets race, by just a couple of minutes from Deeside in 3.22.46, but also the Women’s Vets in 4.08.13.
Lothian were clear winners in the Mixed competition with a stand-out performance, again on Leg 3, by Ian Donnan. Lothian finished in 3.40.03.
Fastest Legs were recorded as follows:
Leg 1: Andy Fallas (Carnethy) – 46.55
Leg 2: Drew Tivendale and Sam Burgess (Deeside) – 39.04
Leg 3: Robbie Simpson (Deeside) – 59.31
Leg 4: Bill Fairmaner (Fife) – 38.07
As usual the day ended with cups of tea, plenty of post-race analysis and a great barbecue sitting in the sunshine.

Well done to the 6 Hillbillies who braved the hills to complete the Glenshee 9. Peter Simpson won 1st M50 and Alison West won 1st F50.
From race organiser Alastair Hubbard:
There were more than a few nervous faces before the start as low cloud shrouded the Glenshee hills suggesting that strong navigational skills could be a key component for this race! However the tops began to clear within 30 minutes of the start and the 105 runners in the last of the SHR championship counters had little problem finding their way around the nine Munros surrounding Glenshee. Good running conditions were reported and this was reflected in both the male and female records tumbling.
Tom Owens pulled away from Robbie Simpson on the final leg of the race to reduce his record by 13 minutes to 3.07.21. Claire Gordon had a strong race to decimate her record from 2008 by 17mins to 3.56.31.
Other notable performances included Tom Scott as 1st MV60 despite a nasty head plant and the small contingent of runners from Italy (on a hill runners exchange) who lent an Alpine feel to the race with their noisy and exuberant supporters. 91 runners completed.
Thanks go to Braemar MRT, Glenshee Ski Centre and Run4It for their support.

Well done to the 11 Hillbillies who turned out for the Dollar Hill Race. Not only was it a Grand Prix counter it was a Scottish Hill Runners and British Championship race. There was a big field and also great cakes at the end. Results to follow.
From Allan Macaulay
The club had a great turnout at the Dollar Hill Race on Saturday. This years race doubled as a SHR Championship event and also a British Championship counter. The huge field of 252 finishers included 11 Carnegie Harriers who took part in the 9.4 mile 3150 ft ascent course.
Leading Harrier was Peter Simpson who finished 42nd overall and was 4th in the MSV category in 1.26.26. A magnificent achievement considering the quality of the runners competing. Peter was 2nd Scot MSV. Dougie McGarry made a welcome return to hill racing and had a very impressive run finishing 160th in 1.45.16. It was a close race for the next four Harriers with Fabienne Thompson leading the pack to finish 173rd in 1.48.18, followed by Colin Reynolds 176th in 1.49.20, Neil Campbell 177th in a course PB of 1.49.24 andAndy Sim 179th in 1.49.39. Tom Bowie making good recovery from injury was 194th in 1.53.39, Stevie Greer 199th in 1.54.23,Alison West 203rd in 1.56.02, Phil Smithard 208th in 1.57.32 and Hill Captain Allan Macaulay bringing up the rear in 212th position in 1.58.20.

Well done to all the Hillbillies who turned out in what Colin Reid described as “Brutal weather conditions”. It was a great race and we did well Alison West got 1st F50, Bill Duff got 1st M60 and Pete Simpson got 3rd M50. Neil Campbell also continued his run of pb’s.
The Bog and Burn series was very fitting for this race as there was a lot of water about just to make it interesting.

RACE REPORT
After rescuing this race from death it was always a risk taking it on, but a healthy field of 53 runners from all over Scotland proved that people want this race to continue and so it will.
Fine conditions on the night meant fast times were on the cards and the race was won by Oleg Chepelin of Shettleston in 33.48. Veronica Oldham (Cosmics) took the ladies title in 39.33. Adrian Davis (Carnethy) was 1st male vet and and Jacqui Higginbottom (Carnethy) was 2nd female and also 2nd Vet. Martin Laing (Fife AC) was 1st over 50, Tom Scott (Fife AC ) 1st over 60 and our own Stevie Cromar was 1st over 70. Jocelyn Scott (Fife AC) was 1st female supervet. The Hawks (Craig Love, Paul Leonard, Ian McNulty) were 1st team narrowly beating Fife by 2 points.
A big, big thankyou to all those who helped out on the course, at registration and in the kitchen. The success of the race is all down to you. Those who donated food ensured that everyone was well fed and watered and feedback from runners was really positive – well done!
Dave Hanlon
Just a reminder that the White Tops Hill race takes place this Friday evening (2nd July) at Balkello woodland Car Park at 7:30 pm. Registration is at Auchterhouse Village Hall from 6:pm.
