The Bad Step after the bad weather
Three hardy hillbillies (Sandy Bennet, Alison West & Neil Campbell) turned up for the Ben Lomond Hill race. At the starting line the weather was a bit dreich not unlike a lot of hill races. We were warned to make sure we had full body cover as it was sleet and snow up the hill. After half way up we could see the change in the weather. Shortly after there was a runner being attended by the mountain rescue suffering from hypothermia, not a good sign. By the time we reached the saddle the snow was drifting across the path and blowing straight into our face making it diffucult to see.
I was so pleased to round the cairn and start heading down again if only to get a bit of speed up and warm up a bit. This brought an interesting challenge of descending an slippy icy path which was fairly tricky. The rest of the race was the usuall fare of filthy, mucky, boggy, rocky routes to the finish.
A well organised race and thanks to the marshals and mountain rescue who stuck it out in really bad conditions.

Sandy Bennet was 14th overall in 1.23.21. Alison West was 1.52.02 to place 2nd F50 and Neil Campbell was 93rd in 1.52.42.

Nobody told me about this part!!
Well done to the 15 Hillbillies who turned out for the Stuc a’ Chroin Hill Race. This year it was a counter for the British and the SHR Championships.
Well done to Andy Symonds who was first Hillbilly in 5th place overall.

The opening race in the 2009 Bog and Burn Hill Race Series got underway on Wednesday evening at the 4 mile (800ft) Whangie Whizz Hill Race near Carbeth. Andrew Wright was the leading Carnegie runner placing 4th overall in 28.59. Sandy Bennet finished 24th in 32.35, Alan Manson was 69th in 37.17 and Alison West was 114th (2nd F50) in 43.24.
The race attracted a field of 159 runners and the next Bog and Burn event takes place on Wednesday 29th April at the Kaim Hill Race followed by the Dumyat Hill Race from Stirling University on Wednesday 7th May. The series consists of ten events with your best four events to count.

Friday 6th March to Sunday 8th March – The Highland Boundary Races, by Dunkeld
The Highland Boundary Races series took place from Birnam near Dunkeld between Friday 6th – Sunday 8th March.
The challenging three race series consisted of the 5 mile River Tay Dash on Friday evening followed by Birnam Hill Classic on Saturday which saw the runners cover a 4 mile course with 1600 feet of climbing. Sunday’s race featured the 11 mile (2600 ft) Deuchary Hill Canter.
The opening River Tay Dash saw Carnegie Harriers place three runners in the top ten finishers with Andy Symonds winning the race ahead of Deeside’s Robbie Simpson while Colin Reynolds placed 8th and Paul Hutton was 9th.
Saturday’s short but steep Birnam Hill Classic saw Clydesdale’s Prasad Prasad race to victory with Andy Symonds finishing runner-up with Deeside’s Robbie Simpson in 3rd place. Colin Reynolds finished his second event in 21st position.
On Sunday, Andy Symonds won the 11 mile Deuchary Hill Canter which involved 2600 ft of climbing and won the overall Highland Boundary Race series award. Colin Reynolds placed 20th in the final event.

There was a good showing of 18 Carnegie runners at Sunday’s Bishop Hill Race which incorporated the 2nd counting event in our 2009 Hill Running Grand Prix.
Congratulations to Fabienne Thompson(27.21) (Who had run the Smokies 10 mile as a warm up and placed 4th overall in 1.08.52) , Alison West (28.24) and Isobel Burnett (29.20) who won the ladies team award for Carnegie. Well done to Alison and Isobel who placed 1st and 2nd respectively in the F50 age group awards.
Tommy Lawrence posted a quick time of 20.08 placing 8th overall and was closely followed by Richie Cunningham who clocked 20.10 in 9th position. Pete Simpson produced another superb run on the hills placing 11th and 2nd M40 in 20.24.
After two events in our Hill Running Grand Prix, Richie Cunningham leads the men with 97 points while Fabienne Thompson leads the ladies with 100 points. The 3rd counting event is on Saturday 11th April at the Clachnaben Hill Race.

The 2nd event in our 2009 Hill Running Grand Prix gets underway at the local and very popular Bishop Hill Race in Scotlandwell. The race starts at 2pm on Sunday 1st of March with entries on the day (£4) at Portmoak Village Hall. The race is 2.5 miles with 1000ft of climbing. A good turnout of club members is requested. If anyone would like to car share for this race due to limited parking in Scotlandwell then please meet at 12 Noon at Dunfermline Academy of Sport.

There was a huge turnout of twenty seven Carnegie runners at Saturday’s Carnethy 5 which also incorporated the first event in our 2009 Hill Running Grand Prix. The six mile race with 2500ft of climbing was even tougher this year for the 500 competitors with the soft snow on the hills shin deep in places.
Andy Symonds was 3rd overall in 53.57. Richie Cunningham placed 36th in 1.02.57 and Scott Bradley swapped the roads for the hills finishing 49th in 1.04.14. Peter Simpson produced a superb run to finish 53rd in 1.04.24 to earn Carnegie’s men 2nd team place overall.
Fabienne Thompson was the leading Carnegie lady clocking 1.14.28 (15th lady) and Judy Turner on her return to fitness after injury was 17th in 1.15.01. Lynne Bennet was the 3rd counter (38th lady in 1.24.12) in the Carnegie ladies team who excelled to finish 3rd team overall.
