Melanie Sinclair - survived the UKA Hill Relay’s!! ) Ran my leg 4 which was about 5 miles, 1,500 ft of elevation in 1:23:46 which is a damn sight slower than I should have done it but a blooming lot quicker than I had anticipated given my injury! Happy with that!
Brilliant day, great running from all our teams and a great event!! Fantastic support from everyone that was there!! Loved it

David Greig – Cracking day at the UKA Hill Relays. I ran leg three with Phil Smith ‘Well’ ard. Through bog and forest he strode like some kind of Aragorn in Carnegie Colours, me more of a bewildered Frodo trotting along behind. We did all right I think.

Chris Davidson – Just back from running Leg 2 Of the UKA Hill Relays, 11ish K and 1600ft of climbing i’m told (East Lomond twice!!) in just under 59 minutes, Happy with that

Kevin Davie -  great day at UKA hill relay race at falkland today. me and baza on leg 1 for carnegies b team had a fab run, with a time of 1hr 53 mins with a distance of 9 and a bit miles, and going up west lomond twice, lol with shed loads a cramp to go with it, happy days )

Neil  Campbell -  Really enjoyed the UKA British Hill & Fell Relay Championships 2010. Thanks to my running partner Dougie McGarry for sticking with it when he could have packed in. A REALLY BIG thank you to all the members and helpers from Fife AC who made the event happen. Great organisation and a great event.

A great turnout of Carnegie Harriers at UKA Hill & Fell Relays today at Falkand with 3 male teams and 1 ladies team representing the club i.e. 24 members participating plus various club supporters etc. Firstly a big thanks to all taking part with particular reference to the “walking / running wounded” eg Kevin Davies, Sandy Bennet, Dougie McGarry, Melanie Sinclair, Campbell Reid and Andy Sim who all were nowhere near fully fit but still committed themselves to representing the club. Hopefully they’re ok after their exertions. We also had Sue Walker and Gillian McCracken who, whilst not recognised hill runners were happy to take on the navigation leg to ensure we had a full ladies team.

Official results will be available soon but Carnegie Seniors were 44th out of 116 teams entered; some great runs in this team with Pete Simpson and Andy Symonds 22nd fastest for leg 3, the navigation leg, and Scott Bradley 18th in leg 4 the East Lomond climb. Great results for these guys as this was up against the best of the UK’s hill runners. The other 3 teams all put in very creditable performances and details will be forwarded when official results received

Glasgow team Shettleston enjoyed unprecedented success over the weekend winning the UK Hill Running Relay Championships from Falkland only twenty-four hours after placing second at the English 6-stage road Relay Championships at Sutton Coldfield. The elite of UK hill running gathered at Falkland for a testing event consisting of four stages over the Lomond Hills with the first and third stages run in pairs.

Shettleston duo Tom Owens and Jethro Lennox took an early lead over the opening ten mile stage coming back to the change-over at Falkland House playing fields twenty-nine seconds clear of Sheffield team Dark Peak with Edinburgh University twenty-five seconds back in third. Michael Gillespie who along with brother Matthew ran at Sutton Coldfield the previous day extended Shettleston’s advantage over stage two while Oleg Chepelin and Matt Sullivan increased the Glasgow teams lead to ninety seconds over the tough seven mile navigational third stage.

Pudsey and Bramley came through over the final five mile stage but it was not enough to stop Shettleston anchored by Matthew Gillespie who came home to take the title sixty-six seconds clear in a total 3 hours 50 minutes 10 seconds. Dark Peak held third holding of the challenge of UK Hill Champion Tim Davies who brought Mercia up from 6th to 4th.

There was also a Scottish triumph in the women’s race as early leaders Carnethy Hill runners were slowly and surely hauled in by Hunters Bog Trotters finishing 39th overall ahead of Carnethy 46th and fast finishers Keswick in 47th.

Hosts Fife AC, who started planning for this event a year ago, not only celebrated excellent organisational success but claimed team awards as third over 50 veterans team and second over 40 women’s team.

Local Lochaber athlete Finlay Wild took first place at Ben Nevis in a time of 1.35.39, followed home half a minute later by Robbie Simpson and past winner, Ian Holmes another 90 seconds or so further back. Ladies winner was Cecelia Mora of Valetudo (Italy) – who also won last year’s IAU World Trail Challenge, ahead of Sarah Ridgeway (Eryri, Wales) and Alwynne Shannon (Mourne, Northern Ireland).

This is a tough race with 20 miles of running, over 4000 ft of climbing and some good navigational challenges to boot.

Nine Hillbillies took on the challenge.

Carnegie Hillbillies dominated the Vet 50 category with “The Awesome” Pete Simpson picking up the M50 prize and finishing fifth in the race on his first running of the course. This is only Pete’s second season in the hills and he is stamping his name, as well as his feet, all over the Scottish Hill running  circuit.

Alison “The Vest” West carried on stocking up her drinks cabinet with yet another F50 category win.

In late breaking news Lady Hillbillies Fabienne, Alison and Melanie won the Ladies team prize. Well done all of you yehah….

The men also won 3rd male team too. Well done to Pete, Steven, Derek and Colin.

Allan Macauley got a ten minute PB, Colin Reynolds knocked 26 minutes off his time and Neil Campbell continued his run of PB’s with an improvement too embarrassingly large to write down. Admittedly last time he ran he jumped off a deer fence after two miles, twisted his ankle and decided that he had started so he would finish the race.

The “True Grit” award goes to Melanie “I’m not going to give up” Sinclair. In her first long hill race and after going over on her ankle last Sunday Melanie stuck in and completed the course even after considering dropping out at Ben Ever.

Conditions for the Ochil 2000’s were good except for the wind, everyone could see where they were going making navigation easier. Although lots of runners seemed to have lost the ability to navigate after completing the last summit Dumyat, ending up on the Sherrif Muir road rather than following the quicker Dumyat hill race route to the finish.

The race was won by Oleg Chepelin (Shettleston Harriers) in an impressive 2:46:36, more than a minute faster than Colin Donnelly’s 2008 record. There was then a race for the next three places with Andrew Fallas (Carnethy) 2:52:18, Stuart Whitile (Carnethy) and Mark Harris (Fife AC) all finishing within 5 seconds of each other, Stuart taking the Vet’s Prize. The first Supervet was Peter Simpson (Carnegie), fifth overall in 3:00:29. The Vet 60 prize went to Jim Patterson of Newcastle AC. 3:30:02.

The ladies’ race it was won by Andrea Priestley of Ochil in 3:09:14 and she was also first vet. Second was Claire Gordon HBT in 3:22:19. The supervet prize went to Alison West (Carnegie) in 4:34:01.

As for the team prizes – Carnethy won the Male team prize and Carnegie won the Female team prize. I must apologise to Carnegie because I awarded the prize to HBT who at the time of the prize-giving were the leading female team.

There were more than a few nervous faces before the start as low cloud shrouded the Glenshee hills suggesting that strong navigational skills could be a key component for this race! However the tops began to clear within 30 minutes of the start and the 105 runners in the last of the SHR championship counters had little problem finding their way around the nine Munros surrounding Glenshee. Good running conditions were reported and this was reflected in both the male and female records tumbling.

Tom Owens pulled away from Robbie Simpson on the final leg of the race to reduce his record by 13 minutes to 3.07.21. Claire Gordon had a strong race to decimate her record from 2008 by 17mins to 3.56.31.

Other notable performances included Tom Scott as 1st MV60 despite a nasty head plant and the small contingent of runners from Italy (on a hill runners exchange) who lent an Alpine feel to the race with their noisy and exuberant supporters. 91 runners completed.

The 10th event in our Hill Running Grand Prix – The Glenshee 9.  The race is 21 miles with 5900ft of climbing.  The race starts at Glenshee Ski Centre at 11am and is a counter in the SHR Championship and Long Classics Series.  Further details can be found at http://www.glenshee9.co.uk

Lynne Bennet takes the F40 title at Carnethy
At last Wednesday’s Carnethy Midweek Hill Race in the Pentlands, Sandy Bennet covered the 3 miles and 1100 feet climb in 30.55 to finish 9th overall and 3rd M40. Lynne Bennet was 36th overall and 1st F40 in 39.43.

Saturday 10th July – Alva Highland Games Hill Race

On Saturday afternoon, Judy Turner was the first lady at the Alva Highland Games Hill Race in 28.06 with Andrew Wright finishing 7th overall in 22.56.

Sunday 11th July – Crieff 10K Race

At the multi-terrain Crieff 10K Race on Sunday morning over 200 runners took part. Carnegie’s Andrew Wright ran an excellent race finishing 2nd overall in 35.52. Mike Harvey was 24th in 41.58 and Frazer Munro finished 33rd in 43.31.

Sunday 11th July – Heart of the Park Challenge, Braemar

Bill Duff wins M60 award in Braemar
Three Harriers travelled north to Braemar on Sunday to take part in the Heart of the Park Challenge. The multi-terrain race saw the 53 runners taking part cover a 12k course along trails and tracks, through bogs and pinewoods of Braemar. Bill Duff ran a great race and was the leading Carnegie runner finishing 24th overall and 1st M60 in 1.07.53. Chris Davidson placed 34th in 1.14.10 and Melanie Sinclair was 38th overall and 6th lady in 1.14.25.

RACE REPORT

After rescuing this race from death it was always a risk taking it on, but a healthy field of 53 runners from all over Scotland proved that people want this race to continue and so it will.

Fine conditions on the night meant fast times were on the cards and the race was won by Oleg Chepelin of Shettleston in 33.48. Veronica Oldham (Cosmics) took the ladies title in 39.33. Adrian Davis (Carnethy) was 1st male vet and and Jacqui Higginbottom (Carnethy) was 2nd female and also 2nd Vet. Martin Laing (Fife AC) was 1st over 50, Tom Scott (Fife AC ) 1st over 60 and our own Stevie Cromar was 1st over 70. Jocelyn Scott (Fife AC) was 1st female supervet. The Hawks (Craig Love, Paul Leonard, Ian McNulty) were 1st team narrowly beating Fife by 2 points.

A big, big thankyou to all those who helped out on the course, at registration and in the kitchen. The success of the race is all down to you. Those who donated food ensured that everyone was well fed and watered and feedback from runners was really positive – well done!

Just a reminder that the White Tops Hill race takes place this Friday evening (2nd July) at Balkello woodland Car Park at 7:30 pm. Registration is at Auchterhouse Village Hall from 6:pm.

On Sunday afternoon the Falkland Hill Race took place with seven harriers taking part. Sandy Bennet was in fine form placing 2nd overall in 23.04. Bill Duff covered the 1200ft ascent and descent in 29.23 (24th), Stephen Greer was 25th in 29.33 and Chris Davidson was 26th in 29.40. Tom Bowie made his return to competitive action placing 35th in 31.02 and Melanie Sinclair completed her 2nd event of the day in 37.50 (47th). Pamela Gilfillan took part in her first hill race finishing 48th in 39.56.
