From race organiser Richard Gatehouse:

Concern midweek had been the quantity of hard snow-ice on the hill. A timely thaw allowed us to run the normal course. Deep slushy snow on the upper slopes made for strenuous progress uphill and some slippery bum sliding on the descent but all the runners returned unscathed having had a good afternoon’s exercise. Overhead conditions were excellent, if a little hazy. Also on the hill were walkers, paragliders, mountain bikers, a micro light and gliders – clearly a good day to be out!

Prasad Prasad of Clydesdale made light of the heavy going and ran in a clear winner. Not far behind were Adam and Mark Harris. Adam pipped Mark by 9 seconds to be first junior and second overall. Second junior was Thomas Knox of Anster Haddies in 13th position overall. Mark was first vet, just one place in front of Lomond Hillrunner Donald MacKenzie. In sixth overall was first supervet Peter Simpson of Carnegie Harriers. First man over 60 was Hugh McPherson.

The ladies had a close tussle as well. Sarah Legge of Fife came in first but was not far in front of two juniors who had a great head-to-head. Robyn Graham beat her fellow Fife AC rival Lucy Duff by one second! Phyllis Mitchell of HBT was first lady super-vet and Carnethy’s Joan Wilson first vet.

First team was Fife AC (17 points) followed by Carnegie Harriers (21) and Lomond (44).

There was also a junior race over the lower half of the course. This was won by Ruari Jardine, ahead of Matthew Legge and Lizzie Knox.

Thanks to the marshalls, timekeepers and spectators – yes, we had quite a few! At the prize giving I omitted, disgracefully, to thank the caterers who provided rolls and soups, one of them a very spicy concoction ideal for a wintry day! Thanks very much.

Thanks also to the competitors who turned out. A remarkable number of clubs were represented on the day.

Symonds places second at Carnethy 5 Hill Race

Carnegie’s Andy Symonds was in tremendous form at Saturday’s Carnethy ’5′ covering the 6 mile course with 2500′ of climbing in 48.58 finishing 2nd overall. Andy enjoyed an excellent tussle with race winner Rob Jebb (Bingley Harriers) who successfully defended his title crossing the line in 48.41.

Richie Cunningham ran a strong race placing 38th in 59.06, Tommy Lawrence was 41st in 59.47 and Peter Simpson finished 54th and 3rd M50 in 1.01.07.

Carnegie’s men finished 3rd team overall with 125 points behind Carnethy HRC (83 points) and Hunters Bog Trotters (87 points).

Fabienne Thompson finished 11th lady in 1.09.45 while Alison West was 39th lady (2nd F50) in 1.12.12 and Isobel Burnett was 41st lady in 1.22.08. Carnegie’s ladies finished 8th team overall.

There was an excellent turnout of 27 Carnegie runners amongst the 484 finishers with many members finding superb early season form on the hills. Alan Manson clocked an impressive 1.06.40 (107th) removing over 6 minutes from his 2009 time. Simon Kuz ran well posting a time of 1.15.38 (246th) and Bill Duff was one of the leading M60 runners completing his race in 1.18.18 (282nd). New member Chris Davidson despite going over on his ankle finished 351st in 1.24.14, Mark Johnstone timed at 1.32.57 and well done to Ken Daniels who placed 2nd M70 in 1.32.58.

Law Breaker hill run 2009

Isobel Burnet Law Breaker

Congratulations to Isobel Burnett who followed up her recent Festive Forest Run victory by placing 1st lady in 49.56 at the Law Breaker Hill Race fromTillicoultry. Nine Harriers took part in the race which is organised by Carnegie’s andrew Wright with a further six members assisting at the event.Due to the snow and cold weather a decision was made to operate the low level route which featured a 3.3 mile course with 565m of climbing which was ran over three laps.

Richie Cunningham was the leading Carnegie athlete placing 13th overall in a strong field of runners. Richie timed at 38.36 and was followed in 19th position by Sandy Bennet who timed at 40.40. Alan Manson had a strong run finishing 27th in 42.09 while Steven King was 34th in 43.56. Paul Hutton covered the icy course in 47.47 (39th). Tom Bowie was 43rd in 39.30 and Stephen Greer was 55th in 53.32. There were 68 finishers.

More Photos of the race can be found HERE

A race report from Andrew Wright can be found below;

68 runners braved the snowy journey to Tillicoultry unsure if they were going to be ascending The Law or if a low level alternative was going to be utilised. As it was the latter option was exercised on safety grounds due to high winds and freezing blizzard conditions further up the hill. However, that didn’t prevent a tough and challenging course of approximately 2km and 185m ascent per lap, utilising the climb running right parallel to the Tillicoultry Mill Glen to the base of The Law proper, before descending the many icy steps and paths of the Glen itself. Three laps were the order of the day.

As with last year the race at the front featured several key names with 2008 winner Robbie Simpson (Deeside) determined to retain his crown. It was not to be. A resurgent Prasad Prasad (Clydesdale Harriers), after a year plagued with injury, looked stronger on each circuit, eventually crossing the line in 32.18. Next in was Robbie, 59 seconds down in 33.17, just ahead of the typically fast descending Brian Marshall (HELP) in 33.22.

The females race proved to be a closer affair this year with top finisher being Isobel Burnett (Carnegie Harriers) in 49.56, holding offBeryl Junnier (Wee County Harriers) who descended with trepidation each lap crossing the line in 51.08. Third spot was taken shortly afterwards in 51.17 by Sandy Brindley (Bellahouston Road Runners) who just pipped Maggie Spalding (Hunters Bog Trotters) in a sprint for the finish.

In the other categories Munro bagging legend Steve Fallon (Carnethy Hill Runners) took the 1st Male Vet honours and 10th overall in 38.15, while Bob Johnson (Carnethy Hill Runners) ran 39.13 to take top Male Super Vet and 15th overall. The 1st Female Vet was visiting American Patricia Pahlman (Unattached) in 71.50.

The team prize went to Carnethy Hill Runners (Jon Ashcroft, Steve Fallon & Bruce Smith) with 20 points.

A big thanks again to race sponsors Sweatshop Edinburgh, the Tryst Brewery in Larbert, and also Tommy Lawrence Fitness, as well as the assistance provided by Carnegie Harriers and others who helped with the kitchen, timekeeping and marshalling duties. Normal service next year weather permitting!

Pentland Skyline 2009

Who says hill running isn't a dirty business?

Pentland Skyline 2009

Record field on windy day at Pentland Skyline

(From Carnethy http://www.carnethy.com)
At the Skyline, the second of Carnethy’s double race weekend, there were a record 170 finishers and 169 of them chased the inspired winner, Oleg Chepelin from Shettleston, who was over 6 mins clear at the end having had one of those “in the zone” runs we all dream about. Murray Strain (HBT) hung onto 2nd from club mate Dan Gay. Shettleston completed the double as Fiona Maxwell won the ladies category (as well as being first Over 40 woman!) with Jacqui Higginbottom second woman and second Over 40 ! Carnethy picked up first over 40 and 50 men’s prizes through Stewart Whitlie (4th) and Murdo McEwan (31st) respectively as well as both team prizes. Graham Arthur of Ilkley was first Over 60.
It was sunny and clear, but runners had to fight the wind on the first half, though were thankful to be blown home in order to get to the cake table as soon as possible (and at least, if possible, to be there before John Blair-Fish!).
Results (results of previous years here).
Matt Davis of Carnethy won the coverted Man-or Mouse title, for the combined Manor Water and Pentland Skyline times, from the 12 brave (or foolhardy!) people who managed it this year, with Chris Oliver (HBT) winning the squeaky mouse by just 26 secs from Caroline Coyle (sorry, this was announced the wrong way round at prize-giving), due to the late burst Caroline put in at the finish of the Skyline which unfortunately cost her the mouse (or was it the tactical slowing down by Chris that won it for him?).

And a report below from Carnethy the organisers

Manor Water Hill Race

Colin Donnelly (Lochaber) produced an outstanding run even for someone of his pedigree. At the age of 50, he not only won the race outright (meaning the Over 50 record is now faster than the Over 40 record ! ), but in recording 68:50 he ran an almost unbelievable time that was only 36 seconds outside the 2006 course record of Brian Marshall (68:14). This year, Brian could only watch as Colin disappeared into the distance, as he came home a distant 2nd in 71:03. First woman was Kate Jenkins in 80:51, comfortably clear of Carnethy’s Lucy Colquhorn (84:46). The field of 86 was the 3rd largest ever and they enjoyed a surprisingly warm (almost too warm for running) autumn day. Carnethy won the Over 40s prize with Bruce Smith finishing 5th and Bruce, Adam Anderson and Andy Spenceley were first team. The race was sponsored by Broughton Ales and every finisher was given a bottle of Greenmantle Beer.
