From race organiser Richard Gatehouse:

Concern midweek had been the quantity of hard snow-ice on the hill. A timely thaw allowed us to run the normal course. Deep slushy snow on the upper slopes made for strenuous progress uphill and some slippery bum sliding on the descent but all the runners returned unscathed having had a good afternoon’s exercise. Overhead conditions were excellent, if a little hazy. Also on the hill were walkers, paragliders, mountain bikers, a micro light and gliders – clearly a good day to be out!

Prasad Prasad of Clydesdale made light of the heavy going and ran in a clear winner. Not far behind were Adam and Mark Harris. Adam pipped Mark by 9 seconds to be first junior and second overall. Second junior was Thomas Knox of Anster Haddies in 13th position overall. Mark was first vet, just one place in front of Lomond Hillrunner Donald MacKenzie. In sixth overall was first supervet Peter Simpson of Carnegie Harriers. First man over 60 was Hugh McPherson.

The ladies had a close tussle as well. Sarah Legge of Fife came in first but was not far in front of two juniors who had a great head-to-head. Robyn Graham beat her fellow Fife AC rival Lucy Duff by one second! Phyllis Mitchell of HBT was first lady super-vet and Carnethy’s Joan Wilson first vet.

First team was Fife AC (17 points) followed by Carnegie Harriers (21) and Lomond (44).

There was also a junior race over the lower half of the course. This was won by Ruari Jardine, ahead of Matthew Legge and Lizzie Knox.

Thanks to the marshalls, timekeepers and spectators – yes, we had quite a few! At the prize giving I omitted, disgracefully, to thank the caterers who provided rolls and soups, one of them a very spicy concoction ideal for a wintry day! Thanks very much.

Thanks also to the competitors who turned out. A remarkable number of clubs were represented on the day.

Symonds places second at Carnethy 5 Hill Race

Carnegie’s Andy Symonds was in tremendous form at Saturday’s Carnethy ‘5′ covering the 6 mile course with 2500′ of climbing in 48.58 finishing 2nd overall. Andy enjoyed an excellent tussle with race winner Rob Jebb (Bingley Harriers) who successfully defended his title crossing the line in 48.41.

Richie Cunningham ran a strong race placing 38th in 59.06, Tommy Lawrence was 41st in 59.47 and Peter Simpson finished 54th and 3rd M50 in 1.01.07.

Carnegie’s men finished 3rd team overall with 125 points behind Carnethy HRC (83 points) and Hunters Bog Trotters (87 points).

Fabienne Thompson finished 11th lady in 1.09.45 while Alison West was 39th lady (2nd F50) in 1.12.12 and Isobel Burnett was 41st lady in 1.22.08. Carnegie’s ladies finished 8th team overall.

There was an excellent turnout of 27 Carnegie runners amongst the 484 finishers with many members finding superb early season form on the hills. Alan Manson clocked an impressive 1.06.40 (107th) removing over 6 minutes from his 2009 time. Simon Kuz ran well posting a time of 1.15.38 (246th) and Bill Duff was one of the leading M60 runners completing his race in 1.18.18 (282nd). New member Chris Davidson despite going over on his ankle finished 351st in 1.24.14, Mark Johnstone timed at 1.32.57 and well done to Ken Daniels who placed 2nd M70 in 1.32.58.

Six Carnegie teams complete the Devils Burden
Fife AC hosted the annual Devils Burden Hill Relay on Saturday morning from Falkland. Six teams representing Carnegie Harriers took part and the complete set of results can be found on the Fife AC website HERE.  Well done to Andy Sim for organising the Carnegie teams and to everyone who took part who all enjoyed a great day on the hills.  Our leading team finished 12th overall.
