This is a tough race with 20 miles of running, over 4000 ft of climbing and some good navigational challenges to boot.

Nine Hillbillies took on the challenge.

Carnegie Hillbillies dominated the Vet 50 category with “The Awesome” Pete Simpson picking up the M50 prize and finishing fifth in the race on his first running of the course. This is only Pete’s second season in the hills and he is stamping his name, as well as his feet, all over the Scottish Hill running  circuit.

Alison “The Vest” West carried on stocking up her drinks cabinet with yet another F50 category win.

In late breaking news Lady Hillbillies Fabienne, Alison and Melanie won the Ladies team prize. Well done all of you yehah….

The men also won 3rd male team too. Well done to Pete, Steven, Derek and Colin.

Allan Macauley got a ten minute PB, Colin Reynolds knocked 26 minutes off his time and Neil Campbell continued his run of PB’s with an improvement too embarrassingly large to write down. Admittedly last time he ran he jumped off a deer fence after two miles, twisted his ankle and decided that he had started so he would finish the race.

The “True Grit” award goes to Melanie “I’m not going to give up” Sinclair. In her first long hill race and after going over on her ankle last Sunday Melanie stuck in and completed the course even after considering dropping out at Ben Ever.

Conditions for the Ochil 2000’s were good except for the wind, everyone could see where they were going making navigation easier. Although lots of runners seemed to have lost the ability to navigate after completing the last summit Dumyat, ending up on the Sherrif Muir road rather than following the quicker Dumyat hill race route to the finish.

The race was won by Oleg Chepelin (Shettleston Harriers) in an impressive 2:46:36, more than a minute faster than Colin Donnelly’s 2008 record. There was then a race for the next three places with Andrew Fallas (Carnethy) 2:52:18, Stuart Whitile (Carnethy) and Mark Harris (Fife AC) all finishing within 5 seconds of each other, Stuart taking the Vet’s Prize. The first Supervet was Peter Simpson (Carnegie), fifth overall in 3:00:29. The Vet 60 prize went to Jim Patterson of Newcastle AC. 3:30:02.

The ladies’ race it was won by Andrea Priestley of Ochil in 3:09:14 and she was also first vet. Second was Claire Gordon HBT in 3:22:19. The supervet prize went to Alison West (Carnegie) in 4:34:01.

As for the team prizes – Carnethy won the Male team prize and Carnegie won the Female team prize. I must apologise to Carnegie because I awarded the prize to HBT who at the time of the prize-giving were the leading female team.

For those of you who love looking at pages of figures, the split times for all 11 controls will be published on www.ochilhillrunners.org.uk later this week.

Two of the hardcore Hillbillies, Alison “The Vest” West and Neil “The Shorts” Campbell, made the trip to Creagan for the race.  Neil finished in just under 4 hours and Alison won the F50 prize.

The race was very well organised with good hospitality and food at the end.

Saturday 21st August saw the inaugural Two Inns race from Creggan Inn to Clachaig Inn Glencoe. Thirty seven runners took part.

The race covers 24km and 1770m of ascent taking in the Corbett Fraochaidh before heading for Sgorr a’ Choise. For most of the route when the weather is right you have the mighty Aonach Eagach Ridge in front of you to reassure you that you are heading in the right direction!

Manny Gorman (Westies) won in a time of 3:04 followed in second place by Lochaber’s Craig Mitchell in 3:06 and third place was Jon Ascroft (Carnethy). First Male Vet 40 was Tim Brand (Lochaber) with Brian Brennan (Westies) taking first MV50 and Raymond Murdoch (Lochaber) first MV60.

The first lady home was Ruth Crewe of Perth Road Runners in 4:01, second lady was Sarah MacKenzie (Lochaber) third lady and first lady V50 went to Alison West (Carnegie) with first lady V40 going to Melanie Nicoll (Tayside Orienteers).

The last mile of the race was over rough, boggy and challenging ground (understatement of the year perhaps). Runners your comments have been noted but Neil Campbell (Carnegie) has photos on the Carnegie Club website to prove that there were smiles at the finish line.

Thank you to all of the marshals from Glencoe and Oban Mountain Rescue Teams and from Lochaber Athletic Club and thank you too to Clachaig Inn, Nevisport and Ellis Brigham for donating the prizes and all who provided the home baking. There was so much food left that we sold it in Clachaig that night and raised more money for the Rescue Teams. Thanks also to to the National Trust Scotland for use of their car park.

Finally thanks to all who turned up to race, I was not sure if it would attract one man and his dog or 100. I aim to make it an annual event and hope to see even more runners next year…I am seeking advice from a local shepherd on the last section!

By the time of the race the early haze had burnt off and it was wall to wall sunshine – our two Italian visitors must have felt at home! Robbie Simpson of Deeside had a good lead by the first visit to West Lomond and by the finish this was stretched to an impressive seven minutes over second placed Andrew Fallas of Carnethy. Mark Harris of Fife came in overall third to take the vets prize with Peter Simpson of Carnegie finishing an impressive fourth as first supervet. As always the descent gully provided good entertainment for spectators (see youtube for an older clip) and we always hold our breath until all are down safely. Bumsliding is definitely faster but the state of your backside may take a bit of explaining! An indication of the stifling heat was the unusual total of ten retirals.

Sarah O’Neill of HBT was first lady home in 2.05.19 with Ellie Homewood of Westies only a minute behind and Julia Connor of Moorfoots taking third place. Hilary Ritchie of Fife took the ladies vet prize with Tilly Smith first supervet.

The Carnethy men and the Fife ladies took the team prizes. Special mention should be made of Bobby Shields (Ben Nevis winner and West Highland way pioneer) who completed the race to celebrate his 65th birthday – well done Bobby!

The Lomonds of Fife race is here again!

The race starts at 1pm on Sunday 15th August. You can sign in at the Strathmiglo village hall from 11.30 to 12.30 and you will be directed to parking along near the start. The start is in fields with livestock so please no dogs.

Please come with full body cover and a compass. We will run off maps of the route for you to use.

After the race you are invited back to the hall for prizes and tea.

The senior race is 1.5 miles long and climbs from Hillend ski slope, Edinburgh to the summit of Caerketton and back, an 800ft climb.

There were more than a few nervous faces before the start as low cloud shrouded the Glenshee hills suggesting that strong navigational skills could be a key component for this race! However the tops began to clear within 30 minutes of the start and the 105 runners in the last of the SHR championship counters had little problem finding their way around the nine Munros surrounding Glenshee. Good running conditions were reported and this was reflected in both the male and female records tumbling.

Tom Owens pulled away from Robbie Simpson on the final leg of the race to reduce his record by 13 minutes to 3.07.21. Claire Gordon had a strong race to decimate her record from 2008 by 17mins to 3.56.31.

Other notable performances included Tom Scott as 1st MV60 despite a nasty head plant and the small contingent of runners from Italy (on a hill runners exchange) who lent an Alpine feel to the race with their noisy and exuberant supporters. 91 runners completed.

The 10th event in our Hill Running Grand Prix – The Glenshee 9.  The race is 21 miles with 5900ft of climbing.  The race starts at Glenshee Ski Centre at 11am and is a counter in the SHR Championship and Long Classics Series.  Further details can be found at http://www.glenshee9.co.uk

Where is Andy Sim?

Well done to the 11 Hillbillies who turned out for the Dollar Hill Race. Not only was it a Grand Prix counter it was a Scottish Hill Runners and British Championship race. There was a big field and also great cakes at the end. Results to follow.

The club had a great turnout at the Dollar Hill Race on Saturday. This years race doubled as a SHR Championship event and also a British Championship counter. The huge field of 252 finishers included 11 Carnegie Harriers who took part in the 9.4 mile 3150 ft ascent course.

Leading Harrier was Peter Simpson who finished 42nd overall and was 4th in the MSV category in 1.26.26. A magnificent achievement considering the quality of the runners competing. Peter was 2nd Scot MSV. Dougie McGarry made a welcome return to hill racing and had a very impressive run finishing 160th in 1.45.16. It was a close race for the next four Harriers with Fabienne Thompson leading the pack to finish 173rd in 1.48.18, followed by Colin Reynolds 176th in 1.49.20, Neil Campbell 177th in a course PB of 1.49.24 andAndy Sim 179th in 1.49.39. Tom Bowie making good recovery from injury was 194th in 1.53.39, Stevie Greer 199th in 1.54.23,Alison West 203rd in 1.56.02, Phil Smithard 208th in 1.57.32 and Hill Captain Allan Macaulay bringing up the rear in 212th position in 1.58.20.
